Thandani is my amazing host sister. I have had the joy of watching her change and grow so much from a 5th grader to a 7th grader. She is kind, independent, hilarious, and intelligent. She is also quite the chef in the kitchen! Thandani has been a bright shining star in my life these last 2 years and in the lives of everyone who knows her. I asked her to write up a little something to share on my blog. Here it is!

My name is Thandani. I am 12 years old and in grade 7. I like to play with my friends. I like playing tag with a homemade ball. We make the ball out of plastic bags and sand.

Here in South Africa we have fruits that you do not have in America and those fruits are called “putšutšu.” The fruits are sweet and a little bit sour. We have lots of games like tag, bricks, and skipping rope.

When I grow up I want to be a doctor. I want to study biology, organic chemistry, general chemistry, English, physics, psychology, sociology, and calculus. I want to become a doctor because I want to help people’s lives.

I am going to miss Thandani so much when I leave. It has been an adventure and blessing to finally get to be the big sister!

I also want to apologise because I’ve done an awful job at keeping up with these featured posts about people at my site. Even so, the countless amazing people still exist and continue to do incredible things for this community locally and beyond. So keep rocking superstars!

I am so thankful for everyone I met over these last 2 years. I came into this experience hoping to build relationships and learn others’ stories. That has most certainly happened and all I can do is humbly say thank you to everyone who welcomed me, extended grace to me, taught me, loved me, listened to me, and shared their story with me. My prayer is that we’ve all become a little bit wiser and kinder with each encounter. I know I have and I am so so grateful.

Keep being you, you awesome person you,

Big Sis Caitlin and Prefect Thandani

P.S. One of the many amazing people I met here was Daniel Lun...my now boyfriend and wonderful musician and human. Check out his 2 recently released singles on Spotify,

Apple Music, or Youtube. And a happy belated birthday to him!

Okay. My fan-girling is done. Goodbye for real! Cheers to the new week ahead :)

WARNING:  This blog represents one limited experience with Peace Corps South Africa.

While I hope my posts inform and challenge those who read them, please remember this is just one small piece of a nation sized puzzle. I can in no way accurately represent the diverse cultures and experiences of ALL South Africans or ALL Peace Corps Volunteers. I’ll try to steer clear of generalizations and simply share my own personal stories from this awesome adventure.
